Commodore's Comments
by Kristin Korinko, Commdore 2024!

What a phenomeNOLE kickoff to Spring!  Thanks to all who helped us kick off the season with the Wind Ceremony.  A HUGE shoutout to both Ted and Thomas Avellone for serving as Event Chair (and I dare say co-chair).  Special thanks to Will Harms and Rick Upson for keeping the fires burning.   Huzzah to all the usual suspects (aka ROADies) who set up and broke it down with nary a quibble.  And, of course,  Swami and the Festoons KILLED it!    I am very proud to be among this seasoned and accomplished group of musical kindreds😊  And to our sound crew, Rick Knerr, Bob Graves, John Gilbert, and Wright Finney, for ALWAYS  ensuring that we give the people what they want!!!  FESTOONS!

The 51st Annual Stephen C. Smith Memorial Regatta is right around the corner!  The dedicated group of volunteers affectionately referred to as the SMITHEREENS have been out in full force ensuring that this year’s event is the best ever!  With Andrea Bennett at the helm as this year’s chair, we KNOW it will be successful! This annual regatta features various seaworthy vessels in the water, not just windsurf rigs!  It is all to benefit the American Cancer Society.  For more information, please go to smithregatta.com.

Our favorite beach is looking better and better.  Again, please send out a huge THANK YOU to all the ROADies and other volunteers who continue to pitch in to restore the beach and our training trailer areas to their beautiful state.  HUZZAH!

Shout out to all our April birthdays !  Enjoy the next trip around the sun (hope it’s not eclipsed, folks! ) 😊

Just a reminder, our next club meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 9 th at District 850.  We hope that you will be there and more windsurfing tidbits from Foiling the River from those who represented!

We hope to see you there!

Warm regards,

Kristin Korinko (Olson)

SPSC Club Minutes, Tuesday, 3/12/2024

Place: District 850

The meeting called to order at 7:13 pm by Commodore Korinko and 18 members present. We were also enchanted and fortunate to have the great Swami with us!

Minutes not approved since newsletter had yet to be published.

Commodore Kristen:  Looking forward to Wind Ceremony.

Vice Commodore Ted: IGN (I Got Nothin’!)

Scribe Bob: Asked Thomas to write article on Wind Ceremony.

Purser Wright:  Was not in attendance so no one knows our financial situation.  Did he skip off to the Caymans in his new jet acquired with SPSC funds?  He’d be lucky to afford a drone with SPSC funds.

Past Commodore: Puffin racing starting this coming Sunday at 1:30 so come on down and give it a try!

Discussion items

Wind Ceremony: $4,000 budget approved for the purchase of shirts and other items.

Jacksonville Regatta: Foil on the River.  Will have charters.

Christmas Party: Due to the generosity of the club, we were able to donate $1,824 dollars to the Shriners Children's Hospital.

Presentation on Swami and the Festoons: Original Wind Ceremonies were 1990-92 with a cookout where a board was buried the first year and a Barbie and rig was buried the next.  Needed a Barbie as the virgin sacrifice. . The 4th year introduced the wind wish sticks since they found out writing wishes on paper only saw the paper blow away when attempts to put it on the fire were made. Swami’s costume came from a friend who use to work for the Homestead. Origins of Chuck being called the Swami and other stories abounded.  No doubt one of these historians will write it up for the rest of us.

Presentation on Mark’s trip to race in Australia were finally shown after Thomas was requisitioned to help.  Great photos and looked like a great time even though many of the people talked funny.  The beer looked good, though.

Adjourned at 8:15.
