The Commodore's Comments - January 2015

Bob Graves, SPSC Commodore, 2015

Back for another go at this Commodore gig: I realized that when I served the first time, I allowed the Board to dictate what I could or couldn’t do. I was new at this, so I trusted their knowledge, and together we did well. However, this time around, the Board consists of four people who had never served before and one whom served a long time ago, so now is the time for me to make my move. Please address me as El Commodante, Supreme Commander, Your Highness, or any of the extreme accolades that will befit my reign! The NSA will be tracking all phone calls of all members (since they were doing it anyway) and informing me of any subversion that might be taking place.

Another new year with the first event coming up, a trip to the Keys. Due to the earlier start of the Keys trip and the later start of the Calema Midwinters March 5th through March 8th there is an opportunity for some of us to attend both. Though I haven’t gone to the Midwinters before, I will be there this year. Linda Downey has done a fine job representing the SPSC down there over the years, but if more of us show, we may get more at our events. Please consider it and check it out at http://calema.com/calema-midwinters/

I encourage you to come to the club meetings this year just to touch base with other members more frequently. In addition, I would appreciate more volunteers for this year’s lessons. We also wish to resurrect the summer race series that we are looking at holding at 3pm on lessons days.

See you at BoB’s (Beef o’Bradys) or the beach. FESTOONS!! Which reminds me, the band is sounding hot this year!

Festivus 2014

Though the weather was cool and a little gloomy, there was a great turnout. The bonfire burned bright and warmed many of use, even Tiki Mon warmed himself as he watched his brothers’ burn. However, we did not get the rain that was expected down there, thus, the first Festivus miracle. The second miracle came in the form of a 1.75 liter bottle of Bombay Sapphire. Thank you Stan!

Our Festivus pole was brand new, in that it hadn’t been seen before. Oddly, last year’s pole was stolen from underneath the trailer so Perry and Bill laid hands on a new one. It was the plain aluminum Orthodox pole, not one of those blasphemous ones made out of beer cans or adorned in some other way.

Thanks to Linda Downey, the Vice Commodore challenged the Commodore to two slalom races using RC windsurfing boards. Apparently, if our EX Commodore, Mark doesn’t practice with a new board, he flat out sucks riding it. The Vice, and soon to be your Supreme Commodore, BobbyG, at one point sailed circles around Mark. If only I could translate those skills to the water.
