The Commodore's Comments - September 2013

by Mike Levine, Commodore

Hello again! It’s been a very raining summer with frequent beach closing. Hopefully some of us got out there between the rain showers. Our next event is the 26th Annual Endless Summer Sailboard Classic to be held September 27th -29th. Weather promises to be perfect! Early and on-line registration is open and closes promptly on Monday September 16th so we can get the tee-shirt order in. You are only guaranteed a coveted designer tee-shirt(s) of your size if you register by September 16th. Early registration snail-mail orders must also be received by September 16th to qualify. Yearly membership dues are due and can be paid with registration. This year’s dinner will be catered by Moe’s and Bobby G will be spinning the tunes. There are some really nice major sponsor raffle items as well. I’m sure this will be an Endless Summer to remember!

On a club business note, we will be voting for club Officers and board members at the September meeting.

Well that’s it for now. I will send out additional information on the Endless Summer as necessary and look for updates and more information on the website. In the meantime, I hope to see you at the club meeting and at the beach!

Club Meeting minutes August 2013

Meeting called to order at 7:33. 18 people present and once again the Commodore started with a joke which went: An old sea captain was sitting on a bench near the wharf when a young man walked up and sat down. The young man had spiked hair and each spike was a different color…green, red, orange, blue and yellow. After a while the young man noticed that the captain was staring at him.

What’s the matter old timer, never done anything wild in your life?

The old captain replied. “got drunk once and married a parrot. I was just wondering if you were my son!”

Everyone laughed heartily and stayed for the rest of the meeting.

Linda mentioned trying to get all regional events back up on our calendar, such as Calema Mid Winters, Island Style Classic Windsurfing in Sarasota, Atlanta Fall Classic on Lake Lanier by Flowery Branch, etc. With Linda Downey and Bill Olson’s assistance, we will pull this together.

Everyone already knew, but the scribe decided to say that there were no new articles from anyone but encouraged anyone that had the desire to write to please do so and send it to the scribe.

Old Business

R&R wrap up. Mentioned Doug Smith’s generous donation.

Training equipment folks want smaller sails and lighter masts and booms. They won’t get them, but they want them.

Last training class is August 24th, a practice race day is September 7th, and the Thomasville Boy scouts are coming for a lesson on September 14th.

Purser says we have money in the bank but owe money for insurance and for Rum n’ Rootbeer expenses. Our membership total is 69, highest in a long time. Dues are due in September.

The slate for elections so far is as follows: Commodore: Mark Powell, Vice Commodore: Unknown, Scribe: Bob Graves, Purser: Wright Finney. The board nominees so far are Ann Getman, Lee Chapin, Mark Voigt, Bill Olson, Jack May, Tina Mazanek, and Linda Downey.

Mike asked for a $4,500 budget for the Endless Summer. All were in favor with one abstaining from the vote. Discussion ensued on the sail numbers on the design for this year.

We will once again have Donaldo’s and a gumbo contest. Supper will be provided by “Welcome to Moe’s!”

The Vice wanted to be recognized and finally was. He mentioned America’s cup sailing going on with the new catamarans with foils.

Bill mentioned a Level 1 Windsurfing instructor class up in Cape Hatteras on August 28th given by US Sailing and hosted by Ocean Air Sports.

Mark Powell asked about housing at Lake Lanier and folks there said they would send info as it came up.

Meeting adjourned at 8:19.
